China Shipping Container Lines Company Limited (CSCL), which was the largest container lines in China, expressed it would take 16 new ships by the end of 2012, totaling 146,800TEU.
In this year, about 90,000TEU was about to be delivered. As more large ships entered CSCL's fleet, the competitiveness especially in Europe route was expected to be enhanced.
Currently the whole fleet of the company reached 500,000TEU. About 56% of them were self-owned while 44% were chartered. The orderbook hit 16 units of 146,800TEU, including eight-unit 4,250TEU Panamax sizes and eight-unit 14,100TEU super large sizes, to be delivered by the end of 2012. Without demolished ships, the transport capacity of the company would be increased by 646,800TEU.
Xie Jia, who was secretary of CSCL, said it was still know whether the charter contract of those old ships would be renewed or not by the end of 2012. Meanwhile, no more expansion plan during that period.
Xie Jia analyzed that the container shipping entered "Large Ship Times", due to lower transport cost. As a result, without doubt the deliveries of new ships would raise the company's power.
Japan, Korea and western countries stepped into sustainable growth period while emerging countries showed strong uptrend. Nowadays, CSCL deployed more ships in South America, Africa, Middle East and East Europe. More profits were believed to be gained from these areas.
