Maersk Line has become the first shipping line to publicly share the environmental performance of its vessels with the launch of the Carbon War Room’s new website: www.shippingefficiency.org
The website shows the estimated environmental performance of all vessels listed in the so-called Fairplay database, based on a design efficiency standard developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In addition to that, Maersk Line has provided operational CO2 emission data according to the Clean Cargo Working Group standard for all of its owned vessels so that both design efficiency and operational efficiency will be available for Maersk Line vessels.
Low carbon leadership
The initiative supports both the low carbon leadership objective in Maersk Line’s 2010–2015 sustainability strategy; and streamLINE, where differentiating on best environmental performance forms an integral part of becoming customers’ first choice. StreamLine is Maersk Line’s strategy initiative to put customers’ priorities first.
“Transparency on CO2 emissions is necessary if customers want to benchmark different shipping lines and make business choices based on environmental performance,” says Jacob Sterling, Head of Climate and Environment in Maersk Line.
Maersk Line’s operational CO2 emission data was independently verified by Lloyd’s Register in October — setting a new standard for transparency on good quality environmental data.
“The Carbon War Room’s new website is an important step in providing more transparency on the environmental performance of shipping lines. Maersk Line would very much like to compete more on environmental issues in the future and we think we are very well prepared to do so,” adds Sterling.
